Henry Eugene Philip Louis D'Orléans, Duke of Aumale, married in 1844 to Caroline Auguste of Bourbon, niece of both Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies and Maria Caroline of Habsburg Lorraine, Archduchess of Austria, both by Francis II Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and Maria Theresa of Bourbon Naples. In 1847 he became Governor of Algeria.
The French know him essentially for an "image d'Epinal" (a fact immortalized by the famous cartoons produced at Epinal), the capture of the Zmala of Cheikh Abd el Kader in 1842, when he was a young general of infantry. Already owner of one of the most sumptuous noble residences of France, the castle of the Grand Cond in Chantilly, D'Aumale inherits the paternal property in Palermo, still called today despite the heavy tampering, Palace of Orleans (seat of the current Presidency of the Sicilian Region).
Man with an extraordinary sense of business, D'Aumale bought it when the Rothschild of Naples auctioned off the vast property of the Princes of Partanna.
