Born in 1603 in Monreale, Pietro Novelli is the son of Pietro Antonio Novelli, renowned painter and musaicist, an erudite man whose library boasts 100 volumes.
At the age of 15 he settled in Palermo where he lived with the painter Vito Carrera from Trapani, working at the Royal Palace, together with Novelli, the other most popular painter in Palermo at the end of 500′. Pietro did his apprenticeship with the nobleman Carlo Maria Ventimiglia, mathematician and master of science.
In 1623, he married Costanza di Adamo, and in 1624, when the plague afflicted the whole city, Pietro entered his short but intense career.
Neglecting a few previous things, it is in 1629, with the commission of a fresco in the Benedictine refectory of the Abbey of S. Martino delle Scale, that we can see the real debut of the Novelli.
In 1630, Pietro entered the Confraternity of the Company of the Rosary and created one of the most famous works, the fresco for the Oratory of the Rosario in San Domenico.
Pietro had two sons, the male died young. The daughter, Rosalia, born in 1628, reveals herself to be such a faithful disciple to her father's model that she could be confused with him for the attribution of certain works.
On 22 August 1647, during a revolt led by Giuseppe d'Alessi in Piazza Vigliena, the painter was wounded with a gun. He died five days later and was buried in the cemetery of the friars in San Domenico. In 1828, thanks to his biographer Agostino Gallo, a bust signed by Villareale was placed in the church of San Domenico, the pantheon of Sicily.
